A Racine shooting investigation is underway, Wis., where three people were shot and injured early Sunday morning. The call for help came in shortly after midnight, and police responded to the scene. Three victims were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police have identified a suspect, a 15-year-old boy who was arrested for first-degree intentional homicide. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the victims’ families pay funeral expenses.
Authorities are not immediately available to release the names of the victims. However, police officials are asking local residents to remain inside their homes until the investigation is completed. While the shooting is a tragedy, it should not be allowed to be a precedent for further gun violence. Racine shooting Mayor C.J. Rouse has asked Racine police to implement a juvenile curfew after the shooting.
Racine police say two people were shot while attending a funeral on May 20. Witnesses said twenty to thirty shots were fired shortly before 2:30 p.m. They said the two people involved were running away from the scene but did not appear to be communicating with each other. The shooting took place at a cemetery in Racine, which is located just outside of Milwaukee. The shooting took place during the funeral of Da’Shontay King Sr., a 37-year-old man.
The victim, Michael King, was killed by a police officer, Zachary Brenner, a four-year veteran of the racine Shooting Police Department. The officer shot King after King refused to drop his gun. Brenner has been placed on administrative leave. The Department of Justice is investigating the incident. It is unknown whether Brenner will face charges in the shooting. The DOJ is still reviewing the evidence and releasing its findings to the Racine County District Attorney.
